View Outside My Kitchen Window - April

This ↗ is where my thoughts have been of late--far and away--as I contemplate the view outside my kitchen window....

You see, we're awaiting the birth of our first grandchild--a daughter for our oldest son.  I'm even dreaming about her, and my thoughts about her impending birth have carried me past exits I should have taken while out driving.  I may need to let Ken do all the driving for a while me thinks.

Every time the phone rings I wonder if this is the call....but so far it's only been telemarketers and the like--sometimes three in an afternoon.  One day the phone rang at 7:30 a.m.!  But it was only the guy we hired to clean up our woods calling to see if we still had snow on the ground before he sent his workmen out.  Don't these people know I'm awaiting a very important call?!

I had a 30% off coupon PLUS a $10 cash coupon at Kohl's that was about to expire so we stopped there this week to spend it.  I found a darling outfit on sale for this little girl (I daren't say what it is yet since I want it to be a surprise), and with the discounts I did not feel guilty at all purchasing yet another outfit.

I sent my son an e-mail the morning after my dream.  I told him I'd awakened twice the night before from dreams about the baby and that she looked like his father-in-law.  He read my e-mail to the mother-to-be while she was hooked up to the fetal monitor at her last appointment.  It made her laugh so much it looked as though she was having contractions.  I told him now he knows how to get labor started before they decide to induce it--just photoshop his father-in-law's head onto a baby and show it to her now and again.  Who knows.  Maybe I've discovered a new birthing technique!  I'll let you know if it works.

Last Fall we bought a low-to-the-ground cement bench for this little one to sit on when she takes walks in the woods with us.  It is held up on either end by gnomes.  I saw another one I want to get as soon as Meadow Farms puts their statuary on sale.  It's a toadstool with a little gnome hiding underneath.  I hope she likes gnomes.  Her father was afraid of clowns when he was little.

This leads me to my question this month.  Is there something preoccupying your thoughts lately?

Still not much happening in the Arbor garden yet--a few of the daffodils are in bloom along with the crocus, and the pansies I planted in the window box.  Can you see the temperature?  It was snowing last Sunday.  Today it was 70 degrees!....

  1. Cathy, I've been thinking about you and the birth of your grandaughter. I know it's hard waiting and I'm sure the mother to be is anxiously awaiting the birth. What wonderful thoughts to fill our minds--the birth of a baby is one of the greatest miracles we will ever experience. So happy that your weather is leaning more toward Spring. My husband and I worked in the back garden today. It was quite wonderful! I just love gardening and am quite happy that my husband is a willing helper. Your garden looks quite lovely and the pansies are beautiful in your window box. Praying for a safe delivery for mother and child. ♥

    1. Thank you for your prayers, Martha Ellen. It's not going to be quite so warm and we will have rain over the next few days, but it will help green everything up. I think many people are preoccupied with thoughts of gardening and whether Spring is here to stay or not right now.

  2. Oh, Cathy. I got so excited when I saw another post so soon! I thought for sure you were going to be announcing the birth of your little pudder. But I guess she'll get here when she gets here, huh? Such a nice month to be born - April. When so much of Nature is being born too. And hopefully nice weather for all those future birthday parties. Some years she may even have an Easter birthday! Boy, you'll be able to have fun with that! I know if I was going to be a grandma, I'd be buying all kinds of things too. In my case, mostly books and educational toys - like the card-carrying teacher that I am! LOL. Well, I'll keep things short in case she's on her way. Take care and talk to you soon!

    1. We're still waiting. They're already making plans to induce if she hasn't come by next week sometime. I'm still waiting to hear the date they've picked. Usually they wait 10 days before they induce unless there's a problem.....so I'd think she'll be here by the 9th no matter what! As for books....I've been collecting for years for a granddaughter. I've saved the boys books and better toys and whenever I see something in a yard sale for a girl that I like I buy it. I've amassed most of the American Girl books, Madeline books and dolls, and of course all of Beatrix Potter's books. I also have all of Tasha Tudor's books just to name a few. I have videos and stuffed animals to go along with most of them. And my favorite are the Reading Rainbow books. I've taped lots of shows and collected the books featured. When my boys were little I had their playroom set up in the basement. When the furnace guy came to clean the furnace and saw the room he thought I ran a preschool/daycare center. :-)

    2. LOL - a daycare center! Well, you are, kind of. You just haven't met your first student yet. Not surprised at all to hear that you've been stockpiling grandchildren-ware. Smart. My mom was the same because she had to wait quite a while. All of her children that had children were in their 30s before the babies started appearing. Needless to say, Mom was a Stepford Grandma - absolutely and perfectly awesome. Bet you will be too. Is Ken outwardly excited too? Or like my dad, is he trying to play it cool?

    3. Hi, Janet. Ken reveals his excitement now and then. We are older for being first time grandparents. My half-sister, who is 7 years older than me, has a grandchild just 3 years younger than my youngest child! My Dad died before my first was born, but my mother was a good long distance grandma for 14 years.

    4. Cathy I certainly sense your excitement about this granddaughter coming any day. There is nothing quite like it! Enjoy every moment. I like the view out your window. I have the same thermometer and we have about the same temperature..

    5. Hi Dotsie. It was a little cooler today....just high 50's. Things are starting to progress a little with the baby. They're scheduled to go in Tuesday night if nothing happens before.

  3. How exciting! We don't have children and most likely will not but I'm so thankful for my sisters beautiful little ones! It's wonderful to watch the family grow and it feels amazing every time they do something that melts your heart. Her youngest is just starting to form sentences and while I was on the phone with my sister the other day she said "By Shelly", okay it sounded more like "by Shewe" but it was so cute. It's so funny to get excited about these small things but at the same time it's huge and amazing. You're going to have so much fun with your new little one!

    1. "L" is very hard for children to get their little tongues around. So is "T". My oldest called his little brother "Mashrew" for a long time (Matthew). :-) I'm glad you have your sister's children to be an auntie to. It's probably as good as being a grandma without having to pay your dues (of going through being a parent--it's not as easy as it looks!) Do they live nearby?

    2. They live a few hours away. Not too bad, but not close enough if you know what I mean.

  4. I also wanted to say I hope you share lots of garden photos as things pop up and bloom! Your view from the kitchen is wonderful!

    1. I intend to! In the meantime, you can look at my very first post to see what it will look like by May--hopefully! I will have to wait and see what effect this past winter had on everything.

  5. The birth of your first grandchild is such a special event! I was in your position last summer, waiting for that phone call. My advice is let your husband do the driving until after the baby is born. :-)

    1. I think I will also let him drive the first time we go to see the baby, too, or else I might get a speeding ticket!
