When I'm 64

When I was 16. . . .
My 16th Birthday Roses from Ken
. . . . and heard this song from the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Band album I could not imagine what my life would be like when I reached that age.  The only person I knew that age was my grandmother!  But now I no longer need to try to imagine for that age has nearly arrived.  When this album came out the summer after my 16th birthday, I'd known my husband-to-be for 8 months and we were already talking marriage once I graduated from high school.  But the Vietnam war intervened and we had to wait an additonal year. How could I even begin to imagine my future when I wasn't even sure he'd come home to be a part of it.

Looking back over these past 48 years that I've known Ken (and now married to for almost 46 years) I could not have imagined what life would be like today.  I have good health, three happy sons, two lovely daughters-in-law, a delightful granddaughter, a cute dog and charming cat, friends and family who care about me, a lovely home I've been in for more than 33 years, and a husband who loves me and insists I am still the 18-year-old he married (I think this is how the adage "love is blind" got started!).  I've had some difficult times in my long life like everyone else, but I've always felt the presence of God since I came to know Him when I was 8, so even those times can be counted as blessings because they drew me closer to Him.

And because I count my Blog friends as one of my many blessings I'd like to celebrate my upcoming birthday by giving a wee present to anyone who has commented on this Blog before today.  You know who you are!  So, in order for me to send you this wee gift you will need to click on the link to my Profile in the sidebar where you'll find my e-mail address.  Send me your e-mail address by the 29th, and I'll send off my wee present to you posthaste!

  2. Happy, Happy Birthday to YOU!!!! Love the pic of your roses! Reminded me of the red roses I would receive on special occasions from my high school beau, now husband of 25 years. He would also drive by my house late at night and leave cards and notes on my mailbox or car for me to find the next morning as I went off to school. Have a wonderful day and thank you for the "wee present" in advance. Hugs ~ Donna E. =)

    1. Donna, I'm not familiar with the Microsoft Mail app. I don't think what I plan to send you needs that, so if you want to e-mail me anyway, I can try sending you my "wee present".

    2. When I "click" the "My Email" tag, a box pops up to allow the app and then to download...No email addie. It won't let me go any further unless I download it. =(

    3. Donna, that is weird. I have no idea what that means. I'm going to put my email here, but I'm putting the word "at" instead of the @ sign so it doesn't get "swept" by those robo sites: enewsgilley at comcast.net

  4. When is your actual b-day, Cath? Do you have any special plans for this one? And hey! When I was reading your post I thought of Paul McCartney and that's how he must feel too. After all, I bet he never thought he'd still be in the thick of the music business and almost an elder stateman of it to boot, when HE was 64. Hope you have a wonderful day, whenever it is. Bet Olivia will have something special for her grammy too! Take care and talk to you soon...

    1. Hi Janet. It's the 29th--the same day as Louisa May Alcott (and her father)! It's also my cousin's birthday. She was born on my 13th birthday and was my flower girl at my wedding. She was my uncle's third daughter and I had my third son on HIS birthday. Isn't that interesting??!! I agree. I just checked to see when Paul McCartney wrote that song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_I'm_Sixty-Four It says he was 16! I'm sure he didn't have a clue then what his life would be like when he was 64.

    2. Cathy - just received your "wee present" in my e-mail and THANK YOU SO MUCH. How nice to GIVE presents on YOUR birthday - you certainly have internalized the "better to give than receive" lesson. Very generous of you. And what a lovely soothing tune too. I closed my eyes to listen and imagined myself floating down a quiet river in the Summer in the most comfortable inner tube ever, just bobbing along hearing birds twittering and feeling the breeze. Truly restful. This tune is going to be bopped right into my "Relaxing" playlist. Thanks again, and I hope you GET lots of presents for YOURSELF next week. Take care and we'll "talk" soon. xoxo and Happy B-day!!

    3. Janet, I'm so glad you were able to retrieve it (some others are having problems!) and that you're enjoying it. I hope you are not snowed in up there. I've heard there are 6 foot drifts in places! Thank you again for the birthday wishes.

    4. I have a Mac laptop - maybe that's making a difference? And no, here in Rochester we've been INCREDIBLY lucky. We only have a couple of inches here, and in my area, literally just a dusting. Buffalo is located in a "sweet spot" between Lakes Erie and Ontario, and no matter how much snow Rochester gets, which is often a lot, Buffalo will get walloped even worse. But good news! This weekend and next week are supposed to warm us up into the 50s and 60s, so whatever snow we have will melt completely away. And hopefully Buffalo will lose of a lot. It's just too soon for all this, especially after last year. :>)

    5. Hi Janet. I agree....it's just too soon to be having deep winter weather, especially after last year. I just came in from walking about through our woods with Gabriel and my fingers are number even though I wore gloves. It's only 32 degrees here! We used to mid-40's this time of year.

  5. An early Happy Birthday Cathy! You need to play that when you celebrate. Some friends just went to a Paul McCartney concert not far from here. So this year your birthday will fall close to Thanksgiving as my sister's usually does, a week earlier. Enjoy the cold weather (I assume you have it like everyone else). I appreciate your gratitude for your life!

OKAY, So all I needed to do was scroll down a bit further to learn more about you. 64 and married 46 years, wow! that is so great and you are so fortunate to be a happy woman living a good life. You honestly have not changed much in all those years, honestly. It is a pleasure to once again wish you a Happy Belated Birthday, after all, it's never too late... you'll be 64 all year!

    1. Thank you, Jeri! Yes, I get to be 64 all year! :-) Having my children later (my youngest is 26) has helped me feel younger than I am. Plus, low lighting helps. ☺
