The Promise of Spring

If it weren't for the lovely bird song that fills my garden it would seem pretty dismal right now. . . .
but with a little closer inspection I discovered the promise of Spring!

The crocus is our harbinger of Spring so it deserves to be front and center!

Next comes the jolly daffodils with their nodding heads of bright yellow!

These little blue flowers are finding their way through the leaf clutter. . . .

The Periwinkle is getting ready to burst out!

Irises are emerging from their long winter's sleep. . . .

And the dependable Dianthus has reappeared, again, along with the Sedum Autumn Joy that will wait its turn to bloom at the end of the summer. . . .

The Rose bush is putting out shoots. . . .

Columbine is waking up. . . .

As is the Yarrow. . . .

The Bleeding Hearts are springing up out of the ground and will be in bloom in no time at all!

Lambs Ears are poking their heads up through last year's leaves. . . .

The Dogwood has buds.  Won't be long now. . . .

And the Lilac is stirring to life. . . .

Azaleas are budding getting ready to display their array of colors. . . .

Even the Irish Moss in the Fairy Garden is starting to show green. . . .

When all looks barren and hope seems lost…..look closer….

  1. Wonderful post and so true about a closer look. Your garden is lovely even in this promising stage. It reminds me of a Williamsburg garden. Soon color will be all around. Our dogwoods are just starting to bloom; I think the cold weather slowed them down. Blessings on your Easter. He is risen!

    1. Thank you for the comparison to Williamsburg Dotsie! I love boxwood and would love to add boxwood throughout my garden and haven't for two reasons: the kind I love (that has a fragrance) is a slow grower and they are EXPENSIVE!

  3. You're lucky, Cathy. Being a little further south you have a lot more waking up in your garden! Looks like a lot to me. So pretty - that special Spring green we only see at this time of year. Rochester is still almost entirely brown and gray, with big dirty "scarves" of snow laying everywhere. Melting for sure, but still dirty & relatively-large. Oh well, we haven't had much new snow in days so things are definitely looking up. Waiting to see a robin myself - I can remember my Mom telling me one day when I was waiting for the kindergarten bus that it wasn't REALLY Spring until you saw a robin. And I still think of that every year. Have seen & heard a lot of geese, but no robins. Although I think they ARE here - I just haven't spotted one yet. I love that first photo of your garden, with Gabriel busily sniffing around. So cute. He must be LOVING it now when he goes outside - so many new intoxicating smells to sniff. Hope you're able to get out there & start digging around yourself soon. Have a wonderful Easter holiday with the family - we're expecting a mild but cloudy day here. And in Rochester, we're happy just to NOT have snow on Easter [it actually happens a lot, especially when Easter is early-ish like it is this year]. Take care! ❤️💜

    1. I've been especially eager for Spring this year for some reason. We may get some snow on Monday I just found out! Perhaps it was the warm February that is making it hard to wait for Spring!

  5. It's wonderful to see the color coming to our gardens again, isn't it? Your first photo is lovely and so neat, Cathy. The design is very pleasing with the white picket fence. I spy sweet little Gabriel enjoying the warmer weather as well. Blessings to you and your family this Easter. ♥

    1. For awhile there was snow in the forecast for Monday! But now it's just rain. It looks like April is going to live up to it's reputation--RAIN!

  7. Yes, the signs are there if we open our eyes to look, and maybe gently push a few remaining bits of winter debris away. Birds wittering away merrily here too, but oh! it is *so* cold and unseasonably wintry!

    1. I think because Easter is early this year my expectations are a bit premature. We are to have a snow flurry or two tonight!

  8. Isn't it just a thrill to spy those lovely greens peeking through the earth> It's like a seek and find mission every year. I go around counting them... "Ah! 20 coneflowers! 5 phlox in that garden! Oh my gosh, the Astilbe is not dead!" Its so much jolly good fun, I feel giddy about it.

    1. Am truly sorry to hear that--6 feet! It was 84 degrees here today--totally not normal for us. Because of the heat the Bleeding Heart have quadrupled in size and are getting ready to bloom. More buds on bushes and trees! So I will be posting Spring is Here! soon.

    1. Hi Jeri! We just got back last night. The time in England WAS wonderful--the trip itself, not so much. I'm eager to look through my hundreds of photos to do blog posts about but we are off again for a family trip next week to a wonderful nearby Chesapeake Bay location so my posts probably won't start going up until June.

    2. I knew you'd have a fabulous time, aside from the travel. I'll be looking for your England pictures in the near future!
