Waterford Fair

The October outing for the Maryland Chapter of the Tasha Tudor Museum Society was to the 71st annual Waterford Fair last week.  The little village of Waterford, VA closes their streets to car traffic and opens it up to hoards of people eager to experience a bit of colonial America.  Waterford was settled in 1733 by a Quaker from Bucks County, PA.  It soon became a thriving farming community centered around the Janney Mill.  You can read more about the history of the community here and how they have been preserving their community's view.

There were four houses open to us that day, but only one let me take photos inside.  I didn't photograph very many craft booths either because of their "no photography" signs.   But I did get lots of photos of the charming houses.  Below is a slideshow of my photos of the day with music from two artists that were playing that day, Bob Bellamy and Wendy Barlow.  If you love their music, as I do (I bought 2 CDs), you can purchase it here.  To view full screen, once you click on the Play ➤ , click on the YouTube icon.  This will give you a better quality picture.  Then click on the 4-corner box in lower right-hand corner to go full screen. . . .

I also made this little video of the one-man band and friends seen in the slideshow. . . .

  2. Dear Cathy, I remember visiting Waterford when I was young. My parents loved to take trips to the mountains in the fall. What a wonderful outing for your Tasha Tudor chapter. I particularly like the one man band with the children. ♥

    1. I hadn't been in years. Sadly, no one served the Brunswick Stew for lunch that I remember so fondly.

  3. I know Wendy from shows, love her music. Many of my art-friends do this show in Waterford whilst I am doing a show in Indianna, Now I see why they love doing the show in Waterford! These homes are just charming and adorable, aren't they?! I love them all. I must catch up on your blog posts, I knew were starting a Tasha T club, but I had no idea you had come so far. How many members do you have? What fun to go on field trips to Historic places

    1. I thought of you Jeri when I saw the Scherenschnitte booth and wondered why you weren't there. Many of the artisans are obviously there for the Loudon County crowd.....Beautiful hand-carved Noah's Arks ($695) for instance. The Maryland Chapter of the TTMS is gaining 2 new members so we'll have 9 at next month's gathering. Only a couple of us made it to Waterford, however, because of schedules.

    2. I know those Noah's Ark people too, Mo Dallas! Yes, they are pricey. I don't do that show because it falls on the same weekend as one of my very favorite and consistent shows In Historic Madison, IN. I just can't give that one up.

    3. Jeri, That's too bad--for me. Waterford is only 35 minutes from me.

Thank you for another great post.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. Waterford is just about the "oldest" you're going to find here in America.

  5. Such a lovely outing, and I did like the gentle music you picked to accompany the slide show. I do so enjoy visiting places I could not otherwise see without this miracle of technology! Thank you ~~~waving~~~

    1. I love that kind of music and was so happy to be able to listen to the music before I bought the CDs.

  6. Cathy, very impressive slideshow; you remain a woman of many talents! The music is so soothing. The only Waterford I've visited was in Ireland - not quite the same. My granddaughter would enjoy accompanying the one-man band. I echo Debs in saying that I really appreciate these armchair travels to places I will probably never visit otherwise.

  7. Waterford, what a spot! You all must have had the best day. I loved your slideshow too. In fact I viewed it after only scanning your text. Then I went back to read every carefully I was stunned to find out that you had made it!! I thought it was a professionally-made video! You are getting extremely skilled at this, my friend. My mom, sisters and I used to go to events like Waterford, craft festivals etc all the time. The village I lived in for 14 years still has an Apple Festival the first weekend of October every year. That's how we got started. After a while we got a little addicted. We even went to the Onion Festival in a little tiny town halfway between Rochester and Buffalo each year! We couldn't believe how many ways you can prepare onions to eat, not to mention all the adorable non-edible onion items to purchase. And the Clothesline Arts Festival in September, run by the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester. Well, that was the one I'd save up for. That had a juried art show and a lot of incredibly-beautiful work from trained professionals. I still have the first thing I bought there [before I knew to save up]. A little blue and white ceramic pitcher I bought for pens and pencils on my desk. We took most of our trips on Saturdays and I always took off on the Friday beforehand so I could get my normal Saturday housework done [and not have to come home and do it on Sunday]. We girls took turns driving, making sure the trunk was fairly cleared out for all the stuff we knew we'd be dragging back with us. We haven't done any trips since Mom died though. Getting older, everyone's busy etc I guess. And personally I think we'd really be very aware that Mom was missing now. She loved these kind of "outings" and was always the catalyst for our trips. It would seem very odd without Mom now. But we'll always lots of very wonderful memories. And thanks so much for the pleasure of this virtual outing today. I love "going along" on all the great places you visit. Take care and talk to you soon.

    1. Janet, thank you for the compliment but as I said in another comment my iMac just does what I tell it to do and then it does everything. Perhaps you and your sisters could go to one of the festivals in memory of your mother and just take her along in spirit! For all you know, she's watching over you girls right now and hoping you'll take her along to one of those festivals!

  10. Hi Cathy,
I am late to the party, but what a lovely way to start my day. The video and music was delightful!
Thank you for the time you take to do it. I usually get away from Texas in the fall, but not this year. I may be feeling a little sorry for myself.......but your excursion really helped!

    1. Chris, I'm sorry you can't get away this Autumn. I am so grateful we live where we do. We just got home from 5 days in New England and northern PA and the leaves were gorgeous! I'll be posting pictures later, so you'll get to see more Autumn color.
