Sunflowers

I have a thing for sunflowers.  I love how they'll follow the sun throughout the day.  And on a chilly day like today, I find their sunny faces warm me.  It's rare that I buy myself flowers, but when I do, they're sunflowers like these I bought earlier this week....

....and like I did when we were on Martha's Vineyard last year.  They graced my morning devotional time on the terrace behind the Carriage House we rented for the week....

At home I have them year-round as garlands around my kitchen windows....
....notice the sunflower hat and dress on Miss Bear above....and in a miniature basket on a kitchen shelf....
....and a towel on my stove....

During the summer and autumn seasons I add them to my decorating scheme....

Even my doll's house....

I am drawn to books about sunflowers such as Sharon Lovejoy's Sunflower Houses....

I've never been able to grow sunflowers successfully but now that we will become grandparents next year I'm eager to try to grow Lovejoy's Sunflower House....

Here is a video explaining why sunflowers follow the sun....

And here is amazing time-lapse footage of sunflowers growing....

I also love paintings of sunflowers.  If you want to see sunflowers drawn using a computer watch this....

I tried to paint a sunflower once, but I won't show you the results....Instead here's an artist's instructions on how to watercolor paint a sunflower....

  3. Hi, Cathy. My SIL is a mad fiend for sunflowers too. She has them all over the house and makes shopping for her very easy for us. My brother seems to find even jewelry with a sunflower theme from time to time. She's a lucky girl. In fact the only thing she doesn't do is grow them! No time I guess. Have you ever grown them?

  4. Cathy ,I love sunflowers also---They do require lots of sun so they can be a challenge to grow in our garden. My 10 year old grandson took some sunflower seeds out of our bird feeder last year and planted them in our brick planter that surrounds our patio--and quess what?---It grew into a lovely sunflower plant--complete with lovely flowers. I have gardened here for 40 years and was shocked at his success--Little children have much to teach us! ♥

    1. Thanks for your interest, Barbara. It's always encouraging to know that someone is reading and enjoying what I share. Much joy to you, too, in 2014. Thank you for all the blogging you do. I've seen more of England that I'll ever hope to visit, so it's wonderful to armchair visit these places.
