Martha's Vineyard - Day 5

Journal entry:  6:27 a.m.  I am indoors.  It is very cloudy & cool this morning.  Showers & thunderstorms are forecast all day.

7:08 a.m.  I've been reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh's "Gift From the Sea".....In her chapter about the shell called Double-Sunrise she writes, "...one has the illusion that one will find oneself in being loved for what one really is, not for a collection of functions.  But can one actually find oneself in someone else?  In someone else's love?"

Because I want to feel a part of the community while I am here, we attend the 11:00 worship service at First Baptist Church just around the block....
The sermon, given by a guest speaker, is entitled "The Pep Talk".  When he asks visitors to stand and introduce themselves we hesitate.  A lady in the pew in front of me smiles and says, "Oh, go ahead."  So I jump up, smile back at the lady and say, "A little encouragement goes a long way."  When the sermon is presented the speaker talks about following through.  At the end we all circle the sanctuary, holding hands, to sing Blest Be the Tie That Binds.  I have to stretch my arms to grab hold of my neighbors' hands.  I tell Ken later that if we had not been there they would not have been able to complete the circle.

We walk into town for lunch and eventually find Waterside Market.  Their warm beef sandwich is delicious.  I have Peach Tea--a treat for me.  We browse a few shops, still looking for gifts to take home.  We decide we want to go to the last movie of the International Film Festival being held here the past few days, but it is sold out. Instead we go back to the house for the car and explore more back roads.  Then come home for tea and the pastries we got at the Black Dog Bakery.  When it is time for supper we go to the Black Dog Tavern....

While waiting for our food we notice the helicopter on top of this yacht.  Later Ken sees the name "Vango" and searches on the Web for the owner.  It purportedly belongs to Oprah, but it is unclear if she is on it.  We do not run into her while we are here....

When we leave the restaurant we go to the dock to get a closer look and see this!

I get goosebumps....

People start to gather.  We stand in awe.  Pictures are taken....

Eventually after half an hour we leave....

....but only to drive farther up the shore to view it from a different spot.  The clouds have moved in....

But it is still brilliant....

As we walk back to our car this little flower begs to be noticed....

I turn and see the sky behind me....

....then take one last look....

....and think about what Anne Morrow Lindbergh said to me this morning....

  1. Great double rainbow, Cathy! Only this morning, I learned about them after a search took me to the AccuWeather site.
The colors in the second bow are inverted and muted which is easy to see from your photos.
Also, the rainbow is higher in the sky when the sun is lower. My photo was taken at 4:40 p.m.
Another comment made was that the possibility exists to see three or four at a time! Happy hunting!

    1. Thanks for the information, Elaine. I will make a point from now on to look for rainbows when the conditions are right in search of a triple or quadruple. Wouldn't that be exciting to see!

  2. Loved the red door and stone walls at the Baptist Church and that the circle would not be complete without you and Ken there---awwww! Sweet! Double WOW is right---the rainbow photos are spectacular! Oh, I am wishing for a trip back up to the Cape!

    1. That church is across the street on the same block where Susan lives. When she mentions hearing church bells, it's this church. The double rainbow was like icing on the cake!
