Beyond the Garden Gates 2017

I've chosen a few of the scenes that captured my imagination this year on the Beyond the Garden Gates garden tour held yearly in Frederick, Maryland.  Click the lower-right corner to enlarge the slideshow to full screen and enjoy Secret Garden's "Sleep Song" as you come with me beyond the garden gate to get a peek at several gardens. . . . .

  1. Another lovely visit to this annual event ~ such hard work must go into it, and what a reward to see it all. Thank you for sharing this moment of calm to begin my morning.

  5. Lilting and lovely music for a garden walk, so nice they have this event each year and that you record it. Are they the same gardens every year and if so, do they change much? I love the red brick house with the bright red door and rose ladder.

    1. The gardens are different every year. I only showed a few because several were uninspiring this year. Maybe they are starting to run out of people willing to have a thousand (?) people trample through their yards! The red brick house was originally the carriage house to the row house. It was one of the largest row house yards in town because it had a huge side yard and covered half the block--but that made it feel less intimate, which is what I love about the other rowhouse gardens.

  6. I do miss my garden now that I've retired and live in an apartment. I'm on the north side as well, so gardening is limited. I'm encouraged by this, though, and shall try my hand at impatiens and some ferns that are safe for kitty cats!

    1. Potted gardens can be just as lovely--and much easier to care for. I hope you can find plants that do well in the shade so you can enjoy gardening once again,
