Out and About - March 2016

March 1st was the first of my 8 watercolor classes.  We spent it learning about the different ways to put the paint on the paper.  I was delighted to discover an old acquaintance I hadn't seen in 16 years was also attending. . .

That afternoon Ken and I had a playdate with Olivia. . . .

On the 4th winter let us know it was not ready to depart just yet. . . .

The next day was the baby shower for our second son and daughter-in-law's baby, hosted by their friends.  Alejandro is due on April 21st!. . . .

We got to see Olivia again the next day so her parents could attend their all-day refresher birthing class. . . .

My second watercolor class assignment was to do a water glaze, then add the different paint colors and hold up the paper and let the colors run together.  Then we were to add words to the page.  When I saw the yellow blotch in the center I saw the "O" in JOY. . . .

It was starting to warm up again.  I thought I'd better get Gabriel in for his bi-annual grooming so I could start the flea and tick preventer on him.   He wasn't as upset with me this time. . . .

On the 10th the Take Joy Society met for a Grandma Moses Painting Party.   Grandma Moses used oil paints, but we used acrylics since they dry faster.  I copied one of the Christmas cards I sent last Christmas. . . .

Finally, Spring arrived in the garden.   This was taken on the 11th.  I'd had my regular dental check-up earlier in the day and found out I needed some additional dental work done by a specialist so this bit of evidence of Spring helped lift my spirits. . . .

If you missed this month's Beatrix Potter & Friends post, you can read it HERE.  This was my watercolor for "The Tale of Samuel Whiskers". . . .

We had another playdate on the 13th.  Olivia loves her Lego blocks. . . .

In my third watercolor class we were given photos of balloons to paint from.   The assignment was about painting sky. . . .

On the 18th we drove up to Pennsylvania to have lunch with friends we don't get to see very often.  Marion had a lovely lunch followed by a St. Patrick's Day-themed dessert. . . .

Our youngest son was settling on his house that day, so the next day we went over to help get the place ready to move into.  The next Saturday we helped him move his furniture.  I had fun planting flowers in his window box which Olivia is admiring (having picked a flower which is what one does when one is 2 and sees a flower). . . .
It was a gorgeous Spring day so Ben's neighbor was out doing things in his yard and spoke to us.  He and his wife and son had come over the Saturday before with a bottle of wine to welcome Ben to the neighborhood and told him lots about it, having lived there 20 years.  While Ben and friends/family were carrying in furniture and I was planting the flowers using a cooking spoon a lady came up the walk with a Welcome Bag of cookies from the community church.  She asked if I was the new neighbor.  Honestly, I felt like I was in Leave It To Beaver!  At that point I wished I was the new neighbor.  It looks like it will be a wonderful, friendly place to live.

My fourth watercolor class assignment was to paint pears and a lace tablecloth.  I managed the pears, but the lace will have to wait for a little more practice. . . .

Because of Ben's move and our second son's weekend away before the baby arrives I did not host Easter dinner the next day.  So I was extremely happy to receive an invitation from Olivia's other grandparents.  Nani and Poppi (we are Grandmommy and Granddaddy) have a small farm that they only bought about 15 years ago when Poppi retired from the military.  They raise chickens and a few beef cows and have had turkeys and pigs on occasion.  I'm so happy that Olivia and her soon-to-arrive little brother (due June 2nd) will have a farm to visit as they're growing up.  I have such fond memories of collecting eggs, milking cows, and playing in the hay barn with the kittens when I was a child.  In the first picture Olivia wasn't too sure around the baby chicks after it had pecked her hand.  Photo 2:  coloring Easter Eggs outside because it's a messy job when you let the egg plop into the cup.  Photo 3:  Feeding corn and hay to the cows with Daddy's help because the cows were kinda scarey.  Photo 4:  Daddy, Olivia, and Granddaddy walking back toward the house.  Photo 5: collecting the eggs from the hen house--Daddy had to be the one to reach into the box--I was surprised how the smell of the hen house brought back my childhood memories.  Photo 6:  Time to hunt for Easter Eggs!  Olivia was running to get the egg in the grass before the chicken who'd come over to investigate it . . . .

My fifth watercolor class was to paint hummingbirds from photos the teacher handed out. . . .

I'm also taking a wonderful Craftsy class on watercolor painting.  It is on sale right now for only $14.99.  Here is the link for their watercolor classes.  The class I'm taking is Luminous Watercolor Mixing.  It is teaching me more about mixing color than I'm learning in my weekly class at the Community Center.  I'm going to sign up for Realistic Watercolors Step by Step while it's still on sale and take it after I finish the first one.  Once you sign-up you can access the lessons forever.  There are lots of other classes on various crafts, too, and they even have cooking classes.

YouTube also has lots of tutorials on watercolor painting.  Here is one I like called 13 Watercolor Techniques.

The last half of March has been very windy here, but seems to be going out as a lamb.  We are looking forward to our newest little lamb towards the end of the month, so there will be much to report next month!

  1. I always enjoy your Out and About posts, Cathy. Olivia is so adorable gathering her Easter eggs and talking so well in that sweet little voice. It reminds me of how quickly our grandsons have grown. I do believe time is passing so quickly now. Your watercolors are so nice. I admire how steadfast you are to your craft. ♥

    1. Thank you, Martha Ellen. It is hard to believe that Olivia will be 2 already in 10 days! We love that she is beginning to carry on conversations with us, even though we can't quite understand every word yet.

  2. Well! You are doing a good job with the painting, I think you have a natural talent. The pears are very nice. There are also dozens and dozens of free online you tube lessons for painting. Your granddaughter is a little peach!

    1. Thank you! I'm finally getting the knack of it which means I can start learning the techniques to make it look more like I want it to look. I'm glad you're going to try the tutorials. I believe that anyone who has the desire can learn to draw and paint if they can write and aren't color blind! 😊

  4. Oh how I enjoy reading your posts! With my Grandsons now at the ages of 9,10 & 11 I miss the Easter eggs hunts, etc. I enjoyed the video of Olive collecting the eggs. That brought back so many precious memories! I too, am looking forward to your April posts and the welcoming of your newest Grand baby!

    1. The boys aren't interested in hunting eggs anymore?! I had the kids home for a Spring Festival a couple years ago for a scavenger hunt. Everyone had a great time. Maybe they would enjoy something like that.

  5. I enjoyed seeing your watercolor paintings. You are pursuing with diligence and it shows, not that I'm an expert. It was nice to read about your month of March and your son's neighborhood does sound wonderful. Olivia is such a pretty child with all her curls. It's interesting her parents had a full day review class! I guess it won't be long before you are a grandma again! We just had our three here for three days and I am so tired! It was hard juggling carpool, homework, piano practice along with the little ones… which is why you have kids when you are young I guess! Happy April!

    1. The review class was also to orient them to this different hospital's policies. It seems hospitals have their own way of doing things in the birthing center.

  6. It looks like March was a very busy month for you! I love the look on Olivia's face when she's in the swing. I hadn't realized until I read this post that we are both expecting grandsons at the same time in April!! I haven't announced the upcoming birth on my blog yet, but Lucy will be getting a brother. I can't believe you only have to get Gabriel groomed twice a year. Fergus would be a disaster if I let him go that long. :-)

    1. Well, Gabriel DOES look a disaster for about 2 months before each grooming. Congratulations on your upcoming grandson! Olivia will also be getting a boy cousin 6 weeks later, so she'll be outnumbered. Your grandson will be outnumbered by the girls.

  8. Wow, I think your son DOES live in "Leave It to Beaver's" neighborhood! How refreshing to hear that there really ARE such nice, friendly neighbors still out there in the world. That's terrific. Of course, all your family helping your son to move also sent a very clear sign - that he is a family guy. I'm sure that was great for his neighbors to see too. I enjoyed hearing about your watercolor classes. I think if I was ever going to try some form of art, it would be watercolor too. I don't think I'd be too skilled at the drawing part, but I'd be loving the color part of it. I just love the look of watercolors - the softness, the gentility, the muted tones, the "freeness." No hard edges etc. You're doing really well too. Practice doesn't necessarily make perfection but it absolutely makes progress - you're certainly proof of that. And how great that Olivia's maternal grandparents have a farm. She and her little brother are going to be loving it there. Her hunting-for-eggs video was precious, and that little brand-new voice is way TOO CUTE. I have a lot of very pleasant childhood memories of farms too. One of my grandmother's best friends had a dairy farm about 2 miles from our house, one we'd pass nearly every day on our way to church, shopping, school etc. And if she had a little extra time my Mom would stop to visit with Grandma's friend, whom she'd known since she was born. We kids loved petting the cows, seeing baby calves and chickens, putting hay in the feeding troughs, picking apples. It looked just like a picture book farm too - yellow farmhouse, big red barn, orchard next to the pasture - the whole nine yards. I still drive past it, only it's quite heartbreaking now because the place is empty. Has been for about 10 years. But it's not too far gone, and when I go by, I always envision [winning the lottery and] buying the place, renovating it. The house, the barn, even the orchard. Twould be the best fun, doing over the farmhouse and the barn. I'd make at least part of the barn into "party space" with vintage reclaimed wood floors, walls. And a catering kitchen. We'd have lots of room for future family events, especially our clambake. I'd spend a lot of time in salvage yards too, looking for vintage materials for the house. Like a huge old porcelain sink with drainboards on both sides. That's one thing I'd really want. I don't know if I'd have any animals beyond dogs and cats, but who knows? If I knew there was a good large-animal vet nearby, I might even tackle a dairy cow or two. Imagine the fresh home-churned butter and yogurt. I think I'd like to keep chickens too, just like Martha Stewart. But unlike Martha, I wouldn't have staff who really do the work. I'd do it myself. The freshest eggs every morning, and for every cake, omelet & quiche. PS - I love your painting with the pears, and quite honestly I like the linens without the lace better. Just a plain, simple scalloped edge to them - very pretty. Happy Spring! 🌷

  9. You have had another busy month! I was very inspired by your watercolour classes. The link that you gave us for your tube looks really good too, in a few months when I have more time on my hands I shall revisit it! I did enjoy Olivia's Easter egg hunt so lovely to spend some of her childhood on a farm and collecting real eggs too! Do you have any advice on flea treatment, Tavi 's sense of smell is so much greater than Daisy's and he hates it? Sarah x
