Raggedy Ann Runs Grandmommy Ragged

♫Children's Song♫

The Adventures of Raggedy Ann
(aka Olivia June)

~First Night~

One fine sunny afternoon Little Olive (aka Olivia June) came to stay
with Grandmommy and Granddaddy while her parents were away.
Grandmommy made a special place for Olive to play
with books and toys all in array. . . .
.....and dolls, of course. . . .
While Granddaddy played musical apps on his iPad. . . .

So little Olive wouldn't be too sad.
. . . .Then she tuckered out just a tad. . . .
(not!)
The little stinker only pretended to sleep, I must add. . . .

But soon it was off to bed for real....for all of us. . . .boy, am I glad. . . .

~Day 1~

Up early to play, then breakfast and all. . . .

Then more play, till Marmee and Poppy (her other grandparents) came to call. . . .
 A walk in the woods, a push on the swing....look Grandmommy, I'm tall. . . .

~Day 2~

To the Care Center Grandmommy and Marmee went to visit some friends,
so Olive could cheer them with her grins. . . .

Then back home to have a snack before naptime. . . .

But not before a bit of music sublime. . . .

Soon Olive was once again in her prime,
in the kitchen helping her "partner in crime". . . .

. . . .my little mime. . . .

~Day 3~

The adventure continues....it's Dress-Up Day!
Time to make-believe and all sorts of play.
She loved wearing that cap, I'd like to say,
But not for long, so she soon had her way. . . .

Off came the cap, off came the dress
Instead it was to hug Gabriel with a tight caress. . . .

Then later a little dance with great finesse. . . .

~Day 4~

Poetry the Calico Cat was still not abiding
She would not come out of hiding
But once Olive in bed was residing
Poetry came out to show her displeasure by presiding
(over Olive's domain). . . .

Wednesday we do our shopping
Our little helper came along hopping. . . .

Then a romp in the yard with lots of yawping. . . .

Ah, look what she found!  Little Red Riding Hood and book. . . .
More dress-up with fairy wings--take a look!
But, no, off this must be shook. . . .

Nothing like a little water play
To end a happy day. . . .

~Day 5~

Our last morning together, and I'm feeling blue
Soon we must bid adieu
A walk down to the mailbox was very much due
To mail my congratulations to my niece and her two.
Yes! Their twin girls made their debut!
And more congrats to my brother and sister-in-law, who
Are grandparents for the first time, too!
On the way back up the steep driveway (phew!)
We stopped to smell the flowers as one must do.

One last stop at the dollhouse to view. . . .

One last merry run through. . . .

Then home at last to greet Mommy and Daddy anew. . . .

A 1941 Cartoon about Raggedy Ann and Andy. . . .

  3. You are the best grandma! What a great week filled with fun, and a sweet corner just for her play. I am sure your arms just ache for her now, while you rest after such a week! And the poetry! I hope she will see this someday.

    1. Thank you, Dotsie. I definitely used some poetic "license" to accomplish what I wanted to say about each photo....so I'm glad it still made some sense! :-)

  5. OMG, that kid is so darn cute! I never get enough of Olivia! Or Olive as you're now calling her. Did I miss that somewhere earlier? Probably. She certainly looks like she had a wonderful time spending the week with you - and kept you busy no doubt. It looks like you have a treasure trove of toys and books for her, which is great. Love the Raggedy Ann outfit, loved her dance video, loved her going after the ball with Gabriel, but my favorite image of all is Olive sitting on Ken's lap looking at the iPad. That is a Christmas card photo for sure. I think that old Paul Anka/Kodak "Times of Your Life" song from the 70s actually started playing in my head when I saw that picture. The runner-up has to be her squeezing Gabriel. I bet at this age she thinks of him as another kid, a furry one who can run a little faster than she can, and a fun playmate who always hangs out with Grandmommy and Granddaddy. I'm also partial to the shot of Olive looking through the French door at you - she looks as though she really wants to come outside and join you on the porch. Thanks for taking the time to "poetize" her visit and for the great photos and videos. I have to admit, I was a teacher of young children for 25 years, and I miss the "little stinkers" even now. Visits from Olive, news about her etc on your blog are so much fun for me. If I were her Grandmommy, I'd be trying to talk her parents into letting me have her on a regular basis - once a week, a weekend or two every month, something like that. Anyway, have a great weekend yourself, take care and talk to you soon.

    1. Janet, I knew you'd like this post. :-) Olivia June's parents have nicknamed her Olive, so that is what I call her when speaking to her, but I still refer to her as Olivia when talking about her. She'll be back for a family gathering tomorrow afternoon, so I'm eager to see how she responds to us. I've left her play corner intact. It will be interesting to see which toy she goes to first.

  7. Little Olivia is so beautiful! It looks like you had a lot of fun taking care of her. This is such a lovely written story you have shared. My little grandson Oliver is coming over to spend two nights. He keeps us busy but we're so happy to be near him to watch him grow up. Have a wonderful weekend. We're expecting much needed rain here in dry parched southern California. My best to you, Pat xx

    1. Hi Pat, Thanks! I hope we'll be able to have Olivia stay again with us--at least for a weekend. We babysit her for the day every other week, but having her here is so much more fun because I get to play with MY toys. :-)

  8. How wonderful that you got to keep Olivia! Each one of these pictures is the very definition of joy. But I"m guessing you were pretty tired by the end of the five days! :-)

  9. Thank you for sharing your wonderful week With Olivia June. It stirred memories of my Mother-in-law.

Nana would set aside her normal routine when I would take our daughter to her home. Games, records, books, toys would all be at the ready.
She lived in the city, and one special day, they walked to the bus line and rode to her neighborhood shopping area where the first wrist watch was purchased at the jewelry store! Neither the ride nor the watch was expensive but what an adventure! Thanks for stirring the memory!

Times change, of course, but what wonderful adventures are ahead of you all!

  10. What a special time you all have had, a week to remember.
I love your photo diary, isn't it wonderful in this modern world to have such a special keepsake of your week. Mostly I love to ignore modern things but camera's & the internet are a great thing.
We love Raggedy Ann too & have many books bought from America on the wonderful internet.
Thank you for this special post.
    Fondly Michelle

    1. Michelle, the Amish do not take photographs and don't have Internet and I always wondered how it would be not to have a photo of your family. Once I read more about them I realized they are such a tight community and are excellent letter writers and every other Sunday they visit family in neighboring communities that they don't need photos and the Internet. They're busy living in the moment doing meaningful work whereas our modern society is so focused on the future that the only way to slow things down and make life meaningful is to "capture" it in a photo. There was a time that the only way to capture an image was to draw it, but that takes time. I think that is why I have a strong desire to be able to draw because it stretches out my "living in the moment" time.
