Snow and Ice

We had our first snow of the year on the 6th. . . .

Snow covered houses. . . .

But the Robins didn't seem to mind. . . .

Bird tracks on the bench near the pond. . . .

After removing all the decorations we set our Christmas tree out in the yard to continue to enjoy its loveliness. . . .

Because of the extremely cold temperatures we still had snow on the ground on the 9th.  Gabriel was itching to get out and run despite the cold. . . .

Then today we woke up to ice coating the trees. . . .

It decorated everything. . . .

Even the herb planter shimmered while the bare Basil stems sported globes of glistening diamonds. . . .

The rose arbor showed off its dangling earrings. . . .

But the ice conspired to change our plans for the day when our car slid off the driveway. . . .

WINTER !

  1. Hi Cathy,
All the pictures are so lovely!! We had a real snow here in my part Western NY this morning too! (where we live we missed being hit by that Buffalo storm.. although Hubby had to work there)
I loved the video of Gabriel!! What a cutie-pie!! The ice pictures are stunning!! :-)
Sending warmth, Many Blessings Dear one, Linnie

    1. Yes, your snows are real snows. Normally what snow we do get melts within a couple days, so it's really be nice to have a snow-covering for a week now. But ice I can do without!

    2. Oh Dear.. I hope that I didn't make it sound like I was some big tough snowman-lady bragging about the NY snow! I really actually had my first real live snowfall here at my house this morning tee hee :-)
All of those storms never reached our house here between Buffalo and Rochester ( we even had a green CHRISTmas) I was sooo excited when I woke up this morning finally to snow! It looked just like your back yard... (well maybe a tad more) :-)
(but thankfully with out the ice) ;-D

    3. No, no, no, dear Linnie! I did not think you were bragging! Quite the opposite. Down this way people whine about the slightest bit of snow and no one knows how to drive in it properly (I learned to drive in northern Indiana/southern Michigan) so when you said you had real snow I figured you had at least 6 inches or more and to us in the mid-atlantic states that's considered a snow event! ☺

  2. Cathy, the video of Gabriel is just the cutest! He is so full of energy. It's hard to believe you received this snow and ice and we didn't get anything. Our grandson went to class this morning to find the classes had been cancelled. It really wasn't necessary as it was above freezing and it was just raining. I guess sliding on one's driveway is better than on the road with other cars. ♥

    1. Yes, and you can see Gabriel's hard to keep up with in my view finder. He is so full of Joy when he's let out to run in the unfenced area of the yard. I try to let him out every day--as long as it's not raining we usually can do it. I pick up sticks while he's running around.

  3. I'm a little jealous of the snow, but not the sliding off the driveway and changed plans. But a forced day staying home is sometimes welcome, depending how badly you wanted to go! It looks pretty. We had thunder today. Do you know what that means?

    1. Hi Dotsie, We were going to babysit Olivia June today. So, yes I was disappointed. ☹ But we plan to go tomorrow. Ken got the car back in the garage later this afternoon. Hmmm, thunder....sounds like something colliding in the upper atmosphere! Or maybe it was me stomping my feet in disappointment when Ken decided it was too risky to go out on the roads. The traffic app showed slower than normal traffic in the region well into the afternoon.

    2. Hi Cathy,
Winter has been everywhere this year it seems. We have had ice several days the past two weeks. The worst was New Years Eve. I had to be at work for Inventory and the usual 35 minute drive was an hour and 15 minutes. But I made it! Here's one for Subaru and being from NE Ohio! Despite the inconvenience isn't it all just beautiful. I took lots of pictures! Just love that video of Gabriel!
      Stay warm!
      Chris from West Texas

    3. Hi Chris. That is another reason we were concerned about venturing out--what the traffic would be like and the added risk of someone sliding into US. I'm glad you made it safely to work that night.

    1. I've never been to Oklahoma. I had to check to see if you are south of us or just west! You are on par with the Carolinas depending on what part of the state you live in. I can see why it'd be 60!

  5. Your snow is so pretty! I'm a little bit jealous. We've only had one snow fall this winter, and it didn't stay for very long. The video of Gabriel cracked me up. That's just what Fergus is like in the snow. It's like a whole new world for them when the white stuff is on the ground. I hope no damage was done to your car when it slid off your driveway!

    1. The car was fine. It missed that pine tree down at the bottom of our driveway. Ken was able to get it out of that awkward position, back it down to the street and then got a running start up our steep grade after most of the ice had melted later in the day.

  7. Cathy, do you mean that your car actually SLID all the way down your driveway? From the house? Is the car sitting at the end of your drive, near the road? If yes, OMG and yikes. We didn't get an ice storm but have had snow here in Rochester several times since the beginning of December. But much less than typical and NOTHING at all like Buffalo got. Christmas this year was definitely green [50 degrees on Christmas Eve]. Where we sit along Lake Ontario, we're usually lucky. We almost never get as much as Buffalo and Syracuse. Even in the worse blizzards it's usually a given that our final tally "in inches" will be less than theirs. Which is strictly OK with me. I loved snow as a child but the older I get, the more I can understand the thinking of "snowbirds." I don't think I'd ever want to live in a warm climate year-round, but I could definitely handle having a comfy cottage in Bermuda to escape to from December through February, LOL! Maybe even March because some of our most memorable snowstorms have hit in March [the changeable temps are famous for creating big snow]. Then again March can be very nice here and I love seeing those brave little crocuses pushing their way up through the ground. Gabriel was SO cute bombing around your yard with his snow joy! I predict that he and Olivia are going to have a lot of fun playing together out there, in every season. He's just the right size for a toddler, for one thing, and he has so much zip! Did I ever tell you that my best friend's childhood dog was a Westie? Well gotta get some laundry going and make myself useful today. Take care and talk to you soon!

    1. Yes, he started sliding (I wasn't in the car) as soon as he got to the downhill part of the drive, but managed to stop in the road without going into the woods across the road! It was on his way back up that he started to slide--backwards--and ended up cross ways. No damage was done and once things melted enough he got the car back up the drive and into the garage. Olivia already has fun with Gabriel. He is so good with her even when she grabs a handful of hair and is left with the hair that came out when he moved away. It will be fun to see them running around in the yard together. Yes, you did tell me about your friend's Westie. I love their personalities.
