View Outside My Kitchen Window - May

As you can see, there's much more green to be seen from the view outside my kitchen window on this fine May day.  My thoughts of late have been of new life.  Spring not only brings the sprouting of flowers and leaves, but for us, a granddaughter.  Yesterday we were delighted to spend the afternoon with Olivia June (aka Olive) and capture these many faces of our three-and-a-half-week-old newborn grandbaby....

I spent an hour holding her in my arms while she slept....

I thought back to my own babies.  Did I ever spend an hour just holding them while they slept?  Or did I immediately put them in their bed once they fell asleep so I could get something done?  I have the feeling I did the latter.

As for my garden, new plants are emerging everyday....

I love to go out into the garden first thing in the morning to see what's new.  I'm still waiting to see if some things made it through our harsh winter.  There is still several plants I'm wondering about, but I haven't given up on them just yet.

I think grandchildren are a wonderful example of how God doesn't give up on us.  A new generation to love in a way, that as parents, we seldom allow ourselves.  "Taking care of" meant, for me, seeing they were fed, clothed, well-rested, educated, etc.  Simply to hold or play with them did not seem to fit into my schedule on a daily basis especially once my second child came along.  I think that's why I loved nursing my babies so much.  It allowed me to spend that quiet time with them without feeling guilty because it was part of "taking care of" them.  In other words, I was very work-oriented.  Everything I did needed to have a purpose and "just holding" and "just playing with" felt frivolous.  Of course now I don't feel that way.  Now I realize the value in just "being with" when it involves children.

Here are more newly emerging plants seen from the view outside my other kitchen window....

Is there something new in your life that you feel excited to nurture?  Have you come to value some things in your life better now than you did when you were younger?  Is there some wisdom you can impart to the rest of us....something we might be taking for granted that you've already come to appreciate that we might not have yet?

  1. I understand where you are coming from. Maybe this is one thing grandparents do--give all that time and attention and the cuddle factor. There is nothing more peaceful than holding a sleeping baby! mmmm.

  2. Cathy, your granddaughter is just precious! I can hear the love in your writing. I agree there is nothing like holding a baby. My grandchildren are no longer babies, but I still get so excited to be in their presence. We flew to New Hampshire to attend our eldest grandson's performance in Our Town this weekend. So I understand that heart bursting with joy feeling! I agree that there is a difference in the daily raising of children and how a grandparent can devote complete attention to a grandchild. It's naturally different. Enjoy every moment with your new precious sweetie! ♥

    1. I'm loving this phase, but I know I'll be even more thrilled when she's old enough to know who I am and we can do stuff together. ☺ It's great that you are able to attend your grandson's performance despite the distance. That's the way I feel. If I can, I will be there.

  3. I love all the pictures of Olivia! I think you have touched on the very thing that makes being a grandparent so special. We have that extra time to enjoy our grandchildren, plus we have the perspective of age to show us how important and precious that time is. And there is nothing in the world that is sweeter than holding a sleeping baby. :-)

    1. On this visit I felt she was actually looking at me at times. She really responded to my husband's voice, too--probably reminded her of her Daddy, who was away for a few days. Spring has indeed arrived, but we are going to have summer temperatures at the end of the week!

  6. With seven babies born between July 1956 and September 1963 my mom didn't get to rock any of her own for an hour while they slept, except maybe me, the firstborn. But once she became a grandma, she said grandparenthood was the reward you got for making it through the parenthood years. And she did all the things with her grandchildren that she wanted to do with her own kids but didn't have the time or money to do. Or was afraid she'd spoil us with... :>) Have lots more fun watching Olivia sleep!

    1. I think I was afraid of spoiling my children, too. It was much too easy to say "no" as a first response. I think parents ought to say "let me think about it" before they give an answer to a request.
