Martha's Vineyard - Day 3

Journal entry:  6:52 a.m. Garden.  Traffic noise - bird sounds - sun cutting through the fog.  The night has already lost it's coolness....My sunflowers on the table - the rock wall to the side - the ivy on the fence behind.  I can smell & feel the dampness in the air when I breathe it in.  The truck noise is the only thing that detracts from the loveliness......[from my devotional "Our Daily Bread"]: " The Lord's creation you'll adore As you observe each day unfold; Let your imagination soar As you His handiwork behold"....  Job 37:2: "Hear attentively the thunder of his voice, and the rumbling that comes from His mouth." ....as in trucks rumbling by??

Today we go to Chappaquiddick Island.  On the map below it is to the east and below the word Edgartown which, on the map, hides the 527-foot wide channel that must be crossed using the Chappy Ferry.

I'm not including music for this part of my story because I want you to experience the quiet solitude we experience during our time here.  Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is on the east side of Chappaquiddick Island.  You must have a special permit to drive out to the lighthouse on the northern tip of the beach, but guided tours are available.  This video is taken from the parking area before we cross Dike Bridge....

We walk across the bridge, pay our entrance fee....

and walk the short distance to the beach....

The solitude we feel is striking....

We pull ourselves away after a bit because there is much more to experience.  Just a mile or so back down the road is the Mytoi Japanese Garden....

We meander the half-mile trail gathering ideas for our own woods and gardens....

We cross the road to walk the Bog trail to the salt marsh pond....
So peaceful....

We drive back to the Chappy Ferry....

....and return to Edgartown....

We make a brief stop in town at the second-hand shop where I find a Sarah McLachlan CD for $1!  We will return to Edgartown later in our week here.  For now we drive out West Tisbury Road to look for Morning Glory Farm where we will have lunch--very delicious mini-quiches for $5 each....

....and purchase tomatoes that Ken adds to the decor of our little home-away-from-home....

We take a nap then walk into Vineyard Haven.   We pass this house that was built in 1833 for whaling captain Richard Luce....

We walk around the neighborhood and see this charming picket fence garden....

....and pass by a cemetery where the person buried here was born in 1796....

Ken is a car aficionado.  He says this is a very, very rare 1954 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet A and is worth upwards of $400,000....and it is parked on the STREET.....

We turn back to William Street and head for Grace Presbyterian Church to partake of their weekly offering of Lobster sandwiches....

We sit at a table with a lovely couple about our age who have lived on Martha's Vineyard for 20 years.  Connie is originally from Washington, DC--our neck of the woods.  Jeff is from Quincy, MA originally.  His parents had a house on the Island starting in 1938 and that is how they have come to settle here.  Their two grandsons from Maryland spend every summer with them here.  We walk back down Franklin Street and pass this wonderful stone wall enclosing several houses....

This is an interesting use for horns on the posts surrounding this little garden....

We settle into our little house for the evening to read.  I use the time to wash my hair and set it in curlers.

  1. I came by to visit your MV tour and you, too, saw places we didn't see!! The Japanese garden? No, we missed that!! What a wonderful little tour; I just loved it, so thank you for putting it together so beautifully....and yes, I love Sarah McLachlan, too; I've seen her in person a couple of times! She's even more wonderful in person than she is on her cd's and that is oftentimes not the case!!

    Have a wonderful weekend,

  2. I love that you enjoyed my tour of MV! I have the same enthusiasm for the Island as SB and want to tell all FOSB about it.
